Grand Master's Palace

At the end of Via dei Cavalieri there is the Loggia di San Giovanni which was one of the entrances to the Grand Master’s Palace. The original building was destroyed in the 1856 earthquake and what we see today is a reconstruction from 1940. It was born as a fortress in the 14th century and was then rebuilt during the Italian occupation and used as Mussolini’s quarters; the restoration, however, was only completed in 1940, a few years after the Treaty of Paris. Inside, precious mosaics from the island of Kos embellish the rooms which house magnificent Japanese vases, gifts from Emperor Hirohito to the Duce.
