Chora Castle and Kalymnos Ruines

Chora is the ancient capital of Kalymnos and it is here that Chora Castle is located, also called the Great Castle or Paleochora, one of the main attractions of Kalymnos. It was built in the 11th century by the Byzantines to counter the threatening Tzachas the emir of Smyrna who raided the islands of the eastern Aegean and at the beginning of the 16th century a polygonal tower for firearms was built in the center of the east wall. In addition to the Great Castle, in the Chora there is also the Chrisocheria Castle and the ruins of Kalymnod which tell its history through a succession of archaeological finds of considerable interest.

Pothia

Capital and port of Kalymnos, the Greek city called Pothia extends at the foot of the two hills and in the narrow plain that unites them. The entrance from the sea is particularly evocative for the white and pastel-colored houses which constitute a singular contrast with the hard gray stone of the island. It is a very lively and dynamic city where you can stop for a good coffee or to buy souvenirs.
